When I was a kid I made friends who called themselves ‘brokes.’ I would go to a friend’s house to dance with them, Mr. Smith said in an interview in his basement before the 2008 presidential campaign. They were just like, ‘Aw, this guy makes fun of us. We’re bad guys.’
The idea of a brothel has spread beyond New York and the west. Last week in Las Vegas, I spoke with a prostitute who works for a gay-owned brothel in downtown Las Vegas, where he and other clients are forced to move in with three other guys. What we learned is that there are so many big, bold, big-swanky women out there, you don’t even think you can be there in one night.
Many cities and states allow these practices. But in some cases, they have a negative impact. The government recently passed legislation requiring prostitutes who do not participate in sexual contact to stop. Many states are working to strengthen this policy, but some do not, such as Utah.
What I do not understand about this policy is why we do not feel better about it. What is worse is that we do not get these relationships, which is so pervasive around the country today because of our government’s lack of policy.
