The president also told a reporter that he expected to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House Wednesday for an event on how to pay for his infrastructure project.
We’ve been talking about getting financing for the highway over the last 30 years, Trump said. We’ve been getting funding for it. And I am very pleased that we are getting funding through the House and Senate, not just right now. I have a huge question for you and you know, I look forward to the meeting. You know, when I am around to bring it up, we’ll talk about it, right now is when it is most important to get this done.
Trump added that he would be ready to meet with the President if he felt something was wrong or needs to be corrected.
The latest news comes amid growing criticism that the president’s infrastructure program is being hampered by over-reach at a time when Obama had pledged to invest millions of taxpayer dollars in infrastructure in developing world areas.
In a press conference before the U.S. announced the 1.4 trillion in stimulus package it was sending to states, the president outlined three ways the project could be funded
1) Reimburse the federal government for the 2.3 billion cost of constructing two new, new, better public bridges at a cost of 1.5 billion.
2) Repair and strengthen existing infrastructure.
3) Reimburse all of the federal government for operating, hiring, and raising money from the states, tribes, and municipalities and ensure effective federal transportation and other support of state, local, and tribal governments to strengthen our public transportation system.
The spending will add 1.1 billion for the project to the 4.6 billion necessary to complete it.
Republicans, however, say it will be impossible before the next presidential election to get the measure passed in a Republican-controlled Congress to pass any spending bill before the March 12 deadline. The Senate is set to approve the 1.4 billion package on Friday.
