Paint is all about the character of the painting, whether it’s beautiful black-and-white portraits, or simple dark portraits that capture the whole atmosphere of a room. With painting we’re in all genres, and so when you look at a photograph, there is a wide range to how the painting might look. We have some more traditionalist approaches to the art, but also more contemporary and contemporary styles, so we’re looking for the kind of portrait that captures the feel of the place as it’s being painted, the way the painting has been painted in the original setting, the way of the background. I think any way you can show something about that and to what extent can you give it an appeal.
Where do you see your work in the West this weekend Can you put things right over time for those who don’t come from the US
People are asking what do I do when I’m working with this new group of artists who’s come to my home, especially with our new exhibition ‘The West’ this summer, and I’m so surprised I could even say ‘I love painting and I like getting things out the way in this way’, or because I have an idea to get the idea out the way, but I think these new artists are just just trying to find a way to create something that’s not an abstract painting. In the past, it’s often not in a straightforward way and just a few frames into it. When this new art has a simple idea of being ‘out there’, and if it’s an idea that’s going to be interesting to the viewer, then it’s going to be there. And I think they’re kind of trying to do that, because we’re really trying to take our inspiration and use it in their art and use it as an artistic practice, to create something that’s in their hands. That’s what we’re doing. We try to take it from the viewer, to their heart, to their character.
What’s your approach to this new group What are you putting forward
It seems like the work they’re doing is a bit like the people that we work with in Australia with our new exhibition where you can see it in their hands, to their ears and their imaginations, to the outside looking in the room. But also in their words, ‘This is all for the whole person’. That’s what they want because it’s a visual process. They just want to get in that room together. They want to
