A little-known but important question about the role of sex and sexual orientation in a child’s development at age 5 is whether a child can fully recognize the gender-specific meaning of the term ‘gender identity.’
While some people don’t really care if children are aware of gender identity, there is an assumption that it may be so, that adults in their early stages are not fully aware that gender is actually a biological difference. This is a belief of many who think that some parents are aware of the terms ‘gender identity’ and ‘biological’ before 5. The key here is to acknowledge the fact that many children don’t see gender outside one’s biological sex, and that this is not a surprise after all.
There have been some studies that suggested that children identify both at 5 and 6 years old, though those results were inconclusive at 11. In an ongoing research project in Denmark, the participants from the ‘nativity’ questionnaires asked children whether, based on their personal beliefs, they preferred one gender to another.
In a study of child age by the Center for Adolescent Development, it appeared that only 17 of children believed that people like sex and gender. The other 40 believed more, and the other half thought very little, including about 4 of children who said they favored one gender to another.
A similar study, published in the Archives of Child Psychology, included children under 15 years old by the Social Science Research Institute in the Netherlands with a range of questions about their feelings about gender and sexual orientation. In their children’s gender questionnaires, the researchers found that a majority (68) preferred sex with different body parts at birth, or both at birth and age 6 years only 15 of children agreed with the term sex at birth. That study appears to have raised the possibility that children will sometimes fall into a binary set of gender, which may or may not be the cause of their desire to identify as either of those categories.
