The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health recommends that
Work in the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), an independent organization designed and run by the National Institutes of Health to coordinate and promote the safe, effective health-care delivery of information technologies
Make the information technology industry responsible for implementing safety, health, environmental and life-cycle management policies that are consistent with research direction
Reassess the risks associated with electronic health records
Establish policies for ensuring that electronic health records of employees of such organizations are kept within state and federal regulatory frameworks
Recognize the opportunities to advance the health of our communities through technological innovation and public-private partnerships and
Improve the accessibility and operation of health information systems to the public by promoting the use of health information technology to meet health needs of people, families, businesses, and the environment.
The Office of Science and Technology Policy also recommends the following recommendations for how to improve health-care information technology and research
Ensure that access to information technology technologies is based on scientific research and data collection, and has the potential to be a basis through which to design better products, services, technology for healthcare professionals, and the public to meet the care needs of their patients and staff members.
