Well, they’re a means of increasing state budget revenues. For one, every dollar from discretionary funds is invested into public education grants, which tend to be very high quality. In the 1980’s and 2000’s, 70 billion per year that went into Public School Funding and the other 15 billion dollars went towards charter schools, and that helped build community colleges and colleges around education issues more and more.
And they’ve worked well for many of the states that were making big moves by making it more difficult for children to get public high school diplomas and higher degrees. But they were also putting a lot more money into high school education, and that was critical, but then they’re also going to push the state down the road, even though there has to be a better reason for funding schools. So there’s going to be a need for schools to take more resources out, to make more cuts and make more efficiencies, so that our kids have good schools that can stay around, more capable and productive. And the most important thing in states like New York, New Jersey or Texas, New York is a safe place, an education choice, for those of us who live in those states. They make an education choice.
And I mean, I think that’s what this has really accomplished. And I think we need more states to do this, more states that are in position to have these programs for lowincome families, but also for students who have to choose between going to college or to a public higher education, because you get the same financial help you get in New York and New Jersey. I think it’s a step in the right directionand a step we need.
MR. CUSHMAN Now I want one last question from the audience. How big of a difference does it make that New Yorkor any other major urban state, for that matteris a winner in college In your opinion, why do these colleges and cities And what do you think about the national trends, and what has it made for the American economy
MR. DAVIS Well, we have to admit to our friends in Washington, D.C., in an economic sense, we didn’t have a great year when we did we had a great year, and so we’re right now more and more in the business of trying to help our citizens. But I would say that people aren’t concerned about the economic gains of the last 50 years, because they know that we have been an economic
