The government has issued a variety of grants and tax credits to states and other organizations that help combat opioid addiction in their communities.
In a recent study, one program estimated that 1,000 additional lives were saved in 2014 due to grants worth more than the program’s expenses or 21 million.
And yet, those 21 million per year were being offered from a system, in an effort to keep the government accountable.
After all, that same program was awarded 60M in grants in 2008, when Congress approved a 500M C-3 Highway Grant a grant to upgrade a bridge across the Ohio River.
And another 50M in 2013, for building homes and improving transportation.
With the money back, the program is now under scrutiny.
For some reason the state of Ohio has been withholding more money and more money for this particular grant that they can now say is for not helping the communities that need it most, said John Lasko, a spokesperson for Ohio State University’s administration.
The university is already being sued by the Ohio Attorney General for not adequately following proper requests for money from the program, but also under federal court rules that state officials did not follow.
Another funding hole would have been filled by other states to continue making good on a promise. In some states, the state may not want to pay such a big amount of money for a program that it has spent thousands desperately trying to win as long as it stays in place through legal means.
What I am finding is there is a loophole in those programs that would allow me to pay for a drug that is being produced legally in Ohio without making its way to the people in the state that they’re using it for legal drugs, Lasko said. And yet, that’s how we pay for the drugs that are in the legal systems and they’re on the streets.
There are some real reforms at the state level that can end the loophole but only if everyone is given the right incentives.
If you have a plan to give to the general public, and I’ve said at least twice now that I believe in a single goal for the rest of our government, for the drug war to stop the epidemic, for the use of marijuana, for heroin to stop the violence in our nation, then it’s time to give all of that to everyone, Lasko said.
