Cape Town - A small white supremacist group in West Virginia may be planning violent protests if the governor’s office does not block plans to repeal a controversial law that required people wearing whiteface to state on their identity cards.
A news release Wednesday issued by the Virginia State Police warned that a racial divide in West Virginia could cost thousands of jobs and lead to the formation of anti-racist groups.
The news release, which goes on to identify what the group is doing to keep the white face from being recognized, has generated a storm of anger among African-American voters. A former mayor who was involved with the group has been taken to prison.
One of the reasons it has been very hard over the last year or so for me personally is our ability to educate and educate to people of color, especially with respect to what they believe in and what they want to achieve, said Anthony Piscotty, a West Virginia Republican and a former state representative.
The White Supremacist Coalition and others that hold similar rallies have threatened to pull the state from the anti-Muslim legislation, which was passed last year and has been criticized by some in Washington and elsewhere.
At the rallies Wednesday, the groups called on the governor to veto the law.
Piscotty said the governor has called a meeting of his state’s state commission on race this week to discuss the bill.
Piscotty said they would be meeting in the coming days and days to work out some of their common ground.
