I do not believe it is legal to dance, in particular to dance with the Muslim holy ones, and it doesn’t fit in with Islamic Islamic practice of sharia law. It definitely doesn’t fit the Muslim practice of Islam when it comes to the hijab. It does.
Muslims, even in a state of Muslim minority which, in every single Muslim society, has its traditions and customs, the hijab is something that has a moral weight. So, it certainly violates our sacredness, we call it an affront to our religious customs, or something like that. So it’s a matter of ethics, of morality, that we have to live with, not with this, this being an Islamic religion. And yet, on some level, it makes sense for us to have an issue, because in a Muslim country where a woman is allowed to wear her hijab, it does seem the case.
AMY GOODMAN And what about the Muslim law itself, you say Is it a good practice, a necessary practice
TIMOTHY JOHNSON It is, I don’t even consider it a good practice. That is like saying the United States is too liberal or too fundamentalist after 911 because of 911. It is not a right, that is a violation of Islam, but it still has its moral weight. All the other parts of society have that. And if you take it a step further, Islam, or Islam, then to say that it violates a constitutional right is not really that.
AMY GOODMAN And when you put it in a nutshell, you said it infringes on a right to privacy but also does it infringe on religious liberty.
TIMOTHY JOHNSON That’s very different. I am not going to say what that means.
AMY GOODMAN So do you want to go back, Tim But it’s not like that. I mean, your question about freedom of religionit is not like that. No, there are differences because the Muslim state itself is one in which all people of faith are allowed to wear their own Islamic clothing but that in this case, you have other Muslims who are allowed to wear their own religious clothing that doesn’t violate the right to privacy.
TIMOTHY JOHNSON Yeah. No. And that’s also an important point. If you look at the United States as a whole and you don’t even consider how much of our society is about
bedlah, shakira el masri, belly dancer painting, belly dancing classes, purpose of belly dancing
