Holland, Ontario (Reuters) - British Columbia’s first-ever drug test is to be carried out in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Addiction and Mental Health to determine if drug use or dependence is responsible for high incidence of psychosis among young adults, according to Health Minister Jane Philpott’s press release.
B.C. has been the first province in the world to pass the test, first in Canada, in 2008 and then again in 2014. It is scheduled to issue a written notice at 12 p.m. local time this week, Philpott said in the release. It is expected the results could be received within a year or two, she added.
But the test will not make it easy for users to take control, and it has been widely condemned for using too much or using too little.
Patients with schizophrenia, which most people would consider psychotic, are more prone to developing such problems in general and to develop psychosis when they are younger. For those with bipolar disorder, many people say they have a hard time keeping a straight face, saying the risk of causing psychosis is too high.
