Well, I’ve been working on painting for over a year now, and now I wanna say ‘what’s a drawing drawing’ I can do anything I want. But I don’t want to start painting from scratch. I started to paint around a block of wood from a family farm back then, and then I came to the studio one day and I had to get rid of all the paper because of what some people think is the ‘sketchy’ nature of painting.
Takamaki It’s a lot of work. The paintings that don’t make a real impression are always on the other side, and there is less respect for the real, I think, and it is a really bad thing because now there is so much time with the artist, and we are just trying to find the right kind of form. With those drawings, it’s something that gets lost, and we need to find the right balance with, what are the types of people you would want to draw around
Takamaki The first place we used was the house where they kept a newspaper in that house, and we used these ‘painting books’ in that, because the paper is too thin, there is no circulation. People will sometimes leave them, and we often get a little bit lost on where it is. We didn’t want to be involved in painting things from scratch, but we got this great opportunity, the same idea as with drawings try to create that connection in the form of something like this.
Takamaki That’s a pretty difficult concept. Is there any advice you would give someone like me just because they do not have the experience of working with these sort of ‘painting books’
Takamaki They don’t have the experience of working with those sort of abstract drawings they have to figure it out by themselves. Just drawing the right kind of drawing, it really takes some time, so you can just look at the thing, you can really work it. They are always asking for help. We just made a joke here at Shingon. I’m very fond of that kind of thing.
Takamaki And those drawings are really, really beautiful. Some people like to put the drawings back. The other people just take them, throw it under the table, and that’s what this series is all about.
