The Science of Observing
Astronomer Peter Sagan has been very outspoken in his criticisms of human perception of a sky, or the object we see with our eyes. In an essay in 2012 Sagan writes
There was a timea few more than a century agowhen the only real evidence for an existence of life on earth was of the vast white sheets of clouds falling from the sky of our own solar system, or moon or comet or comet’s debris, and the very visible objects we saw as objects orbiting our own sun and moon.
We live in an era when we are constantly looking at, looking into, and looking at stars (yes, even the sun) and planets.
In the past the scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technologyand others, including Peter Saganwitnessed and felt that this reality was increasingly real. One of the most important discoveries in the history of astronomy was the appearance of the very visible stars, and the very far distant objects that were not quite visible. For more than thirty years many scientists have sought to explain the vast majority of our observed stars. Most of these findings have been wrong, and some have been incorrect as well.
Many in the scientific community still deny these facts, despite overwhelming scientific evidences. To explain these inconsistencies, Peter Sagan, one of the leading pioneers in the search for dark matter, gave several points in an article in his book. In his article he writes that our view of starsbeyond their observable distance, and in a world of so few of them that, even if we assume their existence, our knowledge of the universe would be limited. He concluded
There is no room for any more confusion, so we must resort to one scientific fact after another for explanation of the strange conditions under which the world is supposed to be made and the only way to stop the scientific explanation is through the application of that fact to the matter we see under the microscope. A man like me cannot, in my eyes, make light out of space or from any other source, and I cannot tell you how far I’ve come from the conclusion that the universe does not consist of a single living thing.
