Mozilla CERT Hackers Have Killed Firefox (Update They Have Reached Level 1, Firefox’s Top Web Hacker)
There are now over 8,300 known security vulnerabilities in Mozilla’s Firefox web site that were not patched as of yet. Most of those vulnerabilities were fixed last week, but some have been still a problem as of today.
At a press conference on Monday, Mozilla’s Peter Sunde explained that the problem affected more than 250,000 Firefox users.
One of the most notorious exploits for security holes is a browser for Linux based Unix-like operating systems called Xamarin. There was a vulnerability that was fixed by the Mozilla Security team in 2007 when the site was not completely secure.
Xamarin was a toolset to make Xamarin secure in Windows XP, operating systems like Windows Vista, and Microsoft Windows 8, that was used for hosting and monitoring a large number of web servers and other systems.
The attack came just a few hours after we reported on security holes in Apache, MySQL, PHP, Ruby on Rails and Javascript.
Xamarin was used to do everything from build websites, to run code on a Windows server and to send messages to the browser. The vulnerability affected all four of them.
A few days ago Sunde explained that he’d been in contact with Mozilla Security about the affected vulnerabilities on the Firefox site. He added that in the past he’d seen a number of people who were affected by Xamarin and had a few questions.
At no time were I aware of any other security vulnerabilities that have been discovered. Most of them were fixed back in August, but they are still patched, he said.
The number of vulnerabilities that were fixed was far higher than the number of vulnerabilities he’d seen previously (5). Most of those were in March.
Xamarin’s vulnerabilities are still used by a large number of web servers globally, and the average annual security patch is now 4 hours or so to maintain proper security.
Security was never an issue for Xamarin until recently. It is a fairly new web application that uses code as a tool to make online computing safer when combined with web servers of large numbers of hosts.
