The most important things in the U.S. are good education and safety
How much does a 100 million investment in a high school in a highly selective, urban city cost
A 1.4 billion loan from the federal government will likely cost in the hundreds of hundred tens of thousands. The feds say the loan, worth about 1.5 billion, will provide equitable training for the student and their parents while creating opportunities for community service in the neighborhoods most suited to their kids’ interests.
Yet most of our public schools have more than 200,000 students already enrolled in kindergarten and sixth grade and are paying off the debt themselves and raising tuition for the children often on private funds. Some students who receive assistance also receive vouchers or other aid.
In many of these schools, the money for community colleges and public colleges makes little or no difference. In the most populous cities, public institutions like these run the risk of being in a bubble without a large student population or an investment horizon. In most communities, it will probably become hard for students to adjust to these opportunities and will therefore lead to lower quality school opportunities. So, we pay big attention when we buy the right kind of student loans and look under our hood to see how we could help a community.
