MEXICO CITY (AP) An activist who was kidnapped by gunmen in Mexico on September 15, 2010, has died at the age of 89.
Jorge Gomez Martinez, the wife of the Mexican ambassador, confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday that she is buried in a cemetery in downtown Mexico City.
She said it was her greatest regret to take an active role in the struggle of the group of armed gunmen on September 14, 2010, when the government shot Gomez in the head with a bullet and released him in a hail of gunfire, killing him.
Authorities told reporters that Gomez was abducted at gunpoint at the border and he died later, at the site of a recent peace rally at their base in Cagayan de Laredo.
The activists who made the statement said that the body was brought south in a coffin.
Martinez is survived by two children, aged 8 and 17.
Her husband, Enrique Lpez Martinez, is a civil servant and has served as an aide to President Michelle Bachelet and the Mexican Defense Ministry.
The gunmen, who were not identified as themselves, are alleged to have shot at government security forces, often with machetes and pistols, during a period of public unrest in Mexico.
They have also kidnapped more than two dozen police officers including the military, soldiers, judges and prosecutors and are now suspected on corruption charges along with a number of other government officials.
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto says the gang’s killings are illegal and it will likely cost his government and the nation dearly.
He also calls for all government employees not to be prosecuted, but he accuses Guillermo O’Neill, who is now in charge of Mexico’s border with the United States, of being the main suspect.
The federal government is pushing ahead with plans to eliminate tax credits to finance infrastructure projects that support low-income households, an overhaul that could help boost the middle class, the financial sector and some investors.
