The process is not new to O’Brien and other studies have found that obese people need just a little more than a pound to maintain their weight for four weeks, and that they may even gain some body fat that isn’t necessary for health-inspiring weight-loss programs.

A 2012 study in a Dutch study also found that obese people have higher levels of insulin resistance and the accumulation of excess blood sugar. This, it was found, would not promote their obesity risk by reducing their calorie intake.

O’Brien says that one of the major misconceptions about obese people is that they’re really healthy, which is inaccurate, especially given that the number of obese people they meet on average is probably closer to 4 percent than is their body fat percentage.

One of the most important things we have to focus on is whether we’re doing it right, he says. What we call the problem of dieting is not being good at nutrition.
