With the rise of Apple and other tech giants like Sony and HTC struggling to become a force in the smartphone market, Samsung’s smartphone business was taken from the ground up when it unveiled its upcoming Galaxy S Edge.
Samsung is planning on releasing the device through its official channels, but the device will launch in Japan before Apple’s iOS 8.0.6 launch in late summer. With that release, Samsung has to prove Samsung is a viable, high-performance smartphone manufacturer by testing its innovative low-cost operating system.
Samsung did not confirm pricing of the device in Japan. But it could well come in around 99year with a 7-inch screen.
This kind of business model is already known to many consumers. Sony, for example, is rumored to like to hold its own in smartphones. Samsung also has a good history of pushing its own smartphones via a large advertising campaign. In 2011, it was reported that Samsung paid 200 million in back royalties that were paid to brands.
In addition, as the iPhone 7 and the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 will be the first Android handsets, Samsung is likely to try its hand at selling smartphones through its own hardware. This will help Samsung become more competitive on the device side. However, the company also has to fight for its own survival in the smartphone market.
This is a long way from when we went from being a small conglomerate, we could start a small company and sell our own chips and have people say, ‘Hey, we have your phone so we can use your handset as a mobile computing device,’ said Eric Heilbronning, vice president of products at Samsung Electronics. You may not come and buy a handset or buy Android phones, but you don’t buy your handset, and that’s a great thing, because we will try we can make your smartphones competitive with Apple.
The smartphone world has become too saturated with information technology. With the launch of a phone through various channels, we found that Samsung has no shortage of ways to bring its smartphones to market and make money on this one.
