A U.S. drone shot down Russian U-2 spy plane near the border of Syria and Iraq on Wednesday.
As of Thursday evening, the Russian government indicated it is still investigating the incident, but it appears the spy plane took off from the U.S.-bound vessel on an interbound flight from Russia to Tal Afar, at the Mediterranean Sea.
The U.S. military denied that the Russian plane took off as it approached Syria by accident.
Our investigation into this incident has progressed, and all Russian and U.S. aircraft are conducting their own checks and are on their way out of the country to support our allies, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said in a statement late Thursday night.
The downed flight is not known to have identified itself, but there were no reports of possible Russian interference in the incident.
Russian Defense Secretary Leonid Bershidsky said that Russia and Syrian aircraft were conducting their own checks, adding that it is possible that it came close to reaching the border in Syria.
The flight also comes as Russia-backed rebels accused the United States of targeting ground-based Syrian rebels for bombing in Syria and its ally Russia has blamed the Syrian rebels of supporting rebels fighting President Bashar Assad.
US President Barack Obama on Tuesday called for an armed, co-ordinated effort to retake government-held areas from the jihadists. The move has been met by protests in the capital Damascus and the opposition army in Aleppo.
More than 50,000 people have been injured and more than two million have fled their homes in eastern Syria.
