In Michigan, people can’t even pay for the cleaning and disposal of dirty dogs anymore. That is a real problem. That is what needs to change. You can start at the public animal welfare organization, the Michigan Human Rights Commission, that will do a job.
It is also the responsibility of Detroit to work with the city on the issue of clean up. It has the right to clean and dispose of its own dogs. It does not have to accept stray dogs and the Detroit Red Cross have put together a project that is trying to do just that. Unfortunately, there are a lot of these dogs in the city that can’t be found. We are working with the Detroit Red Cross and other organizations to bring more people together for this great public service. Detroit needs to be doing something about this issue.
Q Can a car ever be considered a public nuisance, if what you’re talking about is, is a car parked in a public place, could you explain
A When you look at the city, it’s extremely complicated. You know where it’s parked, whether it’s in the street, whether it’s parked right next to a house or in the street. Some people may have problems with this. Some people may have problems with these kinds of vehicles.
I know that you’re going to ask people to pay this. Are you kidding me When the mayor of Detroit, Wayne County, did what they say they will do, they removed all the vehicles, you know, of the cars, and they were saying, You have your right to clean up, you have your right to clean up. So when that happens, there is this confusion in their heads, and this is totally not right. It is a public nuisance.
Q The first question that came up when you said you don’t know how many animals are being housed at the animal shelter.
A I’ll give you 10. The last one that came up. It came up early last night in New York City. You know, people are going to ask what the problem is with this situation. I think there is a lot of confusion. I mean, if you look at them, it isn’t like there is a problem in Detroit. People are going to ask and think very quickly as to where they live, where they go to school, what their food is, where they go to work.
