Once certified, the certified organic food will be sold in organic stores across Ohio, but will be available to consumers only through organic distributors. Currently, only organic foods produced from certified organic produce are sold in grocery stores.
The bill also provides that organic produce for poultry and wild and canned poultry will not be certified under any form of regulation under existing Ohio law. Ohio law is that any organic product, including all of its ingredients, which is not in certified organic produce, except for its production, sold for sale in the state within the State of Ohio and not in any agricultural supply chain are exempt from the state labeling requirement.
The new bill has been introduced in the state Senate but has not yet been taken up in the House. The House version has yet to receive a vote. The bill would require the bill to become law with an agreed-upon amount of 5050 approval for adoption.
