Does the state’s health insurance program protect us from the ravages of cancer
In a report released last week, the Department of Public Health said in an August 2014 report, states have one of the lowest rates of all groups of patients undergoing cancer treatment. At 10 to 21 per patient in 2012, states ranked 23rd in cancer care and 14th in overall state health care spending among states. In 2011, Massachusetts ranked third. The top-ranked in total state spending in that study was Kansas, where a study found there are nearly three times as many cancer patients as people in the state.
But what about women and men In 2010, there were just under 10,900 people in the U.S. in cancer treatment, according to the Centers for Disease Control. So the state’s cancer registry will probably be even more crowded when it comes to the number of women and men treated per person.
That includes women, Dr. Charles Sabet, assistant director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the Institute for Cancer Research, told BuzzFeed News. His study examined the rates at which women were diagnosed and treated with breast cancer, diabetes, and cancer treatment. In the state, women with breast cancer were 2.67 times more likely than women without breast cancer to receive cancer treatment, for a rate that’s 1.4 times higher among individuals aged 20 to 34. What is happening in California, said Sabet, is that women and men of color are in the same category, which is going to be a really difficult state to treat, he added. You have a great number of patients coming forward.
That’s really what Sabet found about how the health care system works. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services’s state cancer registry, California has nearly four times as many people with cancer as anyone in the nation. But the county in the northern part of the state is a bit more densely populated, making it less likely for people to be diagnosed and treated with cancer. The county that has the best rate of men and women in that city is Fresno, which has one of the highest rates of cancer that’s being treated for young people and adults of color. The state had the second-highest rate of men and women in the U.S. for a given age group compared to that of children, although the rate was 2.8 times higher for black adults, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
